Do you plug additional handsets to the phone line as well as the base when using digital cordless telephones?

For example, when buying multi handset digital telephone packs which come with 2 or 3 handsets. I want to place them around the house, but the telephone socket is only downstairs. Do I only have to connect the ‘base’ to the socket, and the other handsets don’t have to be plugged into a socket? Do you only plug in a mains adaptor to the additional handsets?
